Uterine Fibroids

Fibroids are abnormal growths occurring in or on the uterus of a woman. These tumors sometimes become quite large and cause severe abdominal pain and severe periods of time. In other cases, there are no signs or symptoms. Growths are typically benign, or non-cancerous. There is no known cause of fibroids.

What are Uterine Fibroids?

Cause of Uterine Fibroids

It is unknown what exactly causes fibroids. Their growth has been tied to estrogen and progesterone in the female hormones. Studies have found that women are more likely to develop fibroids when they start their periods at a younger age. While taking female hormones is linked to fibroids, it is not the use of birth control pills.
