Neurodegenerative Disease

The brain is an extremely complex organ with a wide range of pathways that allow us to do the amazing things we do. The brain is made up of billions of cells that we depend on every second of every day to function properly. Some of the most important cells in the brain are known as neurons.


Due to the complexity of the brain, brain disorders can arise from very small miscommunications between cells. The word neurodegenerative can be broken down into neuro, meaning brain, and degenerative, meaning to break down or die. Neurodegenerative diseases are an excellent example of the devastating effects of brain cell miscommunication.

What is Neurodegenerative Disease?

Neurodegenerative diseases occur when, over time, the nerve cells in the brain or peripheral nervous system lose function and eventually die. While treatments may help alleviate some of the physical or mental symptoms associated with neurodegenerative diseases, there is currently no way to slow the progression of the disease and no known cures.


Neurodegenerative diseases affect many of your body's activities, such as balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function. Many of these diseases are genetic. Sometimes the cause is a medical condition such as alcoholism, a tumor, or a stroke. Other causes may include toxins, chemicals, and viruses. Sometimes the cause is unknown.


Types of Neurodegenerative Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are the most common neurodegenerative disorders.


Neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction have all been seen in the progression of these diseases. While there is no cure for these diseases, clinical treatments for AD, PD, and MS symptoms may include medications, lifestyle changes, and some other types of therapies. Lifestyle therapies may include specific foods, natural supplements, and diet plans.


Prevention and Treatment

Increased dietary quality and adherence to dietary guidelines emphasizing fruit, vegetables, fish, and fiber consumption were associated with improved cognition among those with and without cognitive impairments. Additionally, in recent neurodegenerative disease research, specific nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, and specific diets such as the Mediterranean and ketogenic diets, have emerged with suggested benefits of prevention, slowing disease progression, and improving patient's quality of life.

People around the world are suffering from neurodegenerative diseases which lead to cell death in the brain. Neurodegenerative diseases are terrible diseases to have, and there is no cure at the moment; however, researchers around the world are searching for ways to help people with these diseases. With so many brilliant minds working on a cure, hopefully people with these diseases will receive help soon!
